I am Bignay, the berry tree of the tropics. My fruits grow in long clusters, turning from green to crimson to black as they ripen. I thrive in warm climates, offering families refreshing berries and farmers a versatile crop for fresh eating and winemaking.
I am a tropical fruit tree producing clusters of small berries.
Native to Southeast Asia; cultivated in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and India.
Water weekly; drought-tolerant once mature.
Requires full sun to partial shade.
Thrives in 25–35°C; sensitive to frost.
Plant in sandy-loam soil; spacing 6–8 meters apart.
Apply compost annually; supplement with NPK 8:10:10 every 2–3 months.
Botanical name: Antidesma bunius; Family: Phyllanthaceae.
Fruits are safe; seeds edible but small.
Moderate; dense canopy reduces dust.
Fruits rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber; used fresh, in jams, juices, and wines.
Susceptible to fruit fly and fungal rot; prune for airflow.
Can live 30–40 years; starts fruiting in 4–5 years; peak yield from year 10 onward.
