I am the "Milk Fruit" of the tropics, a rare and ethereal beauty known for the stunning star pattern hidden within my core. While many know my purple cousin, I am the Green Star Apple, prized for my brighter, lighter, and more delicate flavor profile. Because I am a Graft, I am a "fast-track" tree, designed to fruit much sooner and remain more compact than those grown from seed.
I am a premium exotic fruit prized for my "star-shaped" internal core and my luxurious, milky-sweet pulp that is often eaten with a spoon like a natural custard.
I originated in the West Indies and Central America, but I have become a legendary "backyard treasure" in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and South India.
I love consistent moisture, especially during my flowering stage; however, I am quite resilient once established, provided my soil is well-drained and rich in organic matter.
I am a sun-seeker; I require 8 to 10 hours of direct sunlight to develop the high sugar content and the creamy, "latex-free" texture of my fully ripe flesh.
I am a true tropical soul, thriving in temperatures between 22°C and 35°C; I am very sensitive to frost and prefer the humid, coastal air of the tropics.
As a grafted tree, I have a more manageable, semi-dwarf growth habit perfect for home gardens; I prefer deep, fertile loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH.
I am a moderate feeder; I respond beautifully to organic compost and a balanced fertilizer in early spring, which helps me produce my heavy, pendulous fruit clusters.
My scientific name is Chrysophyllum cainito and I belong to the Sapotaceae family, making me a close relative of the Sapota (Chikoo).
My sweet white flesh is safe, but my skin and seeds contain a milky latex that can be slightly bitter or irritating; ensure pets do not chew on the thick, leathery rind.
My leaves are my most striking feature—glossy green on top and shimmering golden-bronze underneath—providing a massive surface area for oxygen production and wind filtration.
I am an excellent source of calcium, phosphorus, and Vitamin C; my fruit is famous for its "cooling" properties and is often used in traditional medicine to soothe throat irritations.
My fruit must be picked only when fully ripe (soft to the touch), as under-ripe fruit contains sticky latex; I also benefit from protection against fruit flies.
I am a long-lived and sturdy perennial tree; as a graft, I will begin fruiting in 2 to 3 years and can continue to provide "starry" harvests for 40 to 60 years.
