I am the "Glistening Ruby" of the tropical rainforest, a rare and superior relative of the Rambutan. Most people know me by my common name, Pulasan, but in many regions of India and Southeast Asia, I am also called Philosan or Filosan. I produce ovoid, dark-red to purple-maroon fruits that are distinguished by my thick, leathery rind covered in short, blunt, rubbery tubercles rather than the long, hairy spines of my cousin. My flesh is pearly-white, exceptionally sweet, and—unlike most Rambutans—completely freestone, meaning my succulent pulp separates effortlessly from the seed.
I am a high-value exotic fruit prized for being significantly sweeter and less acidic than both Rambutan and Lychee, featuring a firm, grape-like texture that melts in the mouth.
I am native to the Malay Peninsula and Thailand, but I have become a highly sought-after "collector's tree" in the humid tropical belts of Kerala, Karnataka, and West Bengal in India.
I am a true child of the tropics; I require high humidity and consistent moisture, especially during flowering, but I must have well-drained soil to prevent root issues.
I thrive in full, direct sunlight once I am mature, though I appreciate a little bit of dappled shade during my first two years of life to protect my young leaves.
I am an "ultra-tropical" plant, happiest between 22°C and 35°C; I cannot tolerate frost and I fruit best in regions with high annual rainfall and consistent warmth.
I grow into a beautiful, medium-sized evergreen tree (10–15 meters) with a dense, ornamental canopy; I prefer rich, organic-heavy soil and am often propagated through grafting for faster fruiting.
I am a moderate-to-heavy feeder; I love a steady diet of organic compost and respond well to potassium-rich fertilizers which help develop my high sugar content (Brix).
My scientific name is Nephelium ramboutan-ake (formerly Nephelium mutabile) and I belong to the Sapindaceae (soapberry) family.
My white aril (flesh) is safe, but my seeds and skin contain tannins and other compounds that should not be ingested by pets; keep the "twist-off" rinds away from them.
My dense, glossy green foliage is a powerhouse for carbon sequestration and providing localized cooling through transpiration in hot, humid environments.
I am an immunity booster rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants; my seeds are unique because, unlike the Rambutan, they are edible raw and have a flavor similar to almonds.
I can be a bit shy to fruit if the humidity is too low during pollination, and I am highly sensitive to dry, scorching winds that can burn my leaf tips.
I am a sturdy, long-lived perennial tree that begins fruiting in 4 to 6 years and can continue to provide "honey-sweet" harvests for 40 to 60 years.
