I am the legendary "grandfather" of many modern mango varieties, famous for my stunningly beautiful skin that features a bright yellow base covered in a heavy, deep red blush. My flesh is a vibrant apricot-yellow, rich in flavor, and carries a classic, sweet, and aromatic taste with a firm texture that contains just a hint of fine fiber near the stone.
I am one of the most historically significant mango varieties, known for my bold colors, large fruit size, and for being the parent of many famous cultivars like Tommy Atkins and Kent.
I originated in Coconut Grove, Florida, in 1910, as a seedling of the Mulgoba mango brought from India, sparking the Florida mango industry.
I prefer deep, regular watering while my fruit is developing, but I need excellent drainage to prevent my roots from getting "wet feet," which I dislike.
I thrive in full, direct sunlight; maximum sun exposure is essential for me to develop my iconic deep red blush and rich sugar content.
I love warm, tropical to subtropical climates between 21°C and 35°C and am sensitive to frost, which can damage my delicate flower panicles.
I grow into a large, magnificent tree with a rounded canopy, so I need plenty of space in the garden and deep, fertile soil to truly flourish.
I benefit from a balanced organic fertilizer in early spring and an extra application of potash in the summer to help my fruits reach their full flavor potential.
My scientific name is Mangifera indica 'Haden' and I belong to the Anacardiaceae family.
My fruit flesh is safe for pets in moderation, but my sap, leaves, and large pit contain natural irritants and should be kept away from them.
My massive, dense evergreen canopy is a powerhouse for air filtration, absorbing significant amounts of CO2 and releasing fresh oxygen.
I am rich in Vitamin A and antioxidants, and my historic status makes me a prized "legacy" tree for any fruit enthusiast's collection.
I can be sensitive to anthracnose and powdery mildew in very humid or rainy conditions, so I appreciate a spot with good air circulation.
I am a very long-lived and sturdy perennial tree that can continue to provide legendary harvests for 50 to 80 years or more.
